Sung every evening of Kartik
Śrī Dāmodarāṣṭakam
Eight prayers by Satyavrata Muni from the Padma Purana. Hold a lamp, wave it slowly before the Lord, and sing.
Sri Damodarashtakam
Spoken by the sage Satyavrata Muni and recorded in the Padma Purana, these eight verses glorify Lord Damodara, the child Krishna bound by His mother's love. Srila Sanatana Gosvami includes them in the Hari-bhakti-vilasa, and devotees sing them every evening of Kartik while offering ghee lamps to the Lord.
namāmīśvaraṁ sac-cid-ānanda-rūpaṁ
lasat-kuṇḍalaṁ gokule bhrājamānam
yaśodā-bhiyolūkhalād dhāvamānaṁ
parāmṛṣṭam atyantato drutya gopyā
I bow to the Supreme Lord, whose form is eternal, full of knowledge and bliss, whose earrings swing to and fro, and who shines in Gokula. Afraid of mother Yashoda, He jumped from the grinding mortar and ran away, but she chased Him swiftly and caught Him from behind.
rudantaṁ muhur netra-yugmaṁ mṛjantam
karāmbhoja-yugmena sātaṅka-netram
muhuḥ śvāsa-kampa-trirekhāṅka-kaṇṭha-
sthita-graivaṁ dāmodaraṁ bhakti-baddham
Seeing the stick in His mother's hand, He cries and rubs His frightened eyes again and again with His two lotus hands. His quick, sobbing breaths make the pearl necklace on His three-lined throat tremble. I bow to this Lord Damodara, who is bound not by ropes but by His mother's love.
itīdṛk sva-līlābhir ānanda-kuṇḍe
sva-ghoṣaṁ nimajjantam ākhyāpayantam
tadīyeṣita-jñeṣu bhaktair jitatvaṁ
punaḥ prematas taṁ śatāvṛtti vande
By such childhood pastimes He drowns the residents of Gokula in pools of bliss, and He shows those who know His heart that He is conquered only by the love of His devotees, not by their power or knowledge. With love, I bow to Him again and again, hundreds of times.
varaṁ deva mokṣaṁ na mokṣāvadhiṁ vā
na cānyaṁ vṛṇe 'haṁ vareśād apīha
idaṁ te vapur nātha gopāla-bālaṁ
sadā me manasy āvirāstāṁ kim anyaiḥ
O Lord, though You can give every blessing, I do not ask You for liberation, nor for the highest heaven, nor for any other boon. My only prayer is that this form of Yours, as the little cowherd boy of Vrindavana, always appears in my heart. What use are other blessings to me?
idaṁ te mukhāmbhojam atyanta-nīlair
vṛtaṁ kuntalaiḥ snigdha-raktaiś ca gopyā
muhuś cumbitaṁ bimba-raktādharaṁ me
manasy āvirāstām alaṁ lakṣa-lābhaiḥ
O Lord, Your lotus face is framed by soft, dark curling locks tinged with red, and mother Yashoda kisses it again and again. Your lips are as red as the bimba fruit. May this lotus face always be present in my mind. I have no need of a hundred thousand other gains.
namo deva dāmodarānanta viṣṇo
prasīda prabho duḥkha-jālābdhi-magnam
kṛpā-dṛṣṭi-vṛṣṭyāti-dīnaṁ batānu
gṛhāṇeśa mām ajñam edhy akṣi-dṛśyaḥ
O Lord Damodara, O unlimited Vishnu, I bow to You. Please be pleased with me, my master. I am drowning in an ocean of sorrows. Shower the rain of Your merciful glance on this fallen and ignorant soul, lift me up, and become visible to my eyes.
kuverātmajau baddha-mūrtyaiva yadvat
tvayā mocitau bhakti-bhājau kṛtau ca
tathā prema-bhaktiṁ svakāṁ me prayaccha
na mokṣe graho me 'sti dāmodareha
O Damodara, while You were bound to the mortar, You freed the two sons of Kuvera, Nalakuvara and Manigriva, from their curse as trees and made them Your devotees. In the same way, please give me Your own loving devotion. I have no desire at all for liberation.
namas te 'stu dāmne sphurad-dīpti-dhāmne
tvadīyodarāyātha viśvasya dhāmne
namo rādhikāyai tvadīya-priyāyai
namo 'nanta-līlāya devāya tubhyam
I bow to the rope, radiant with light, that bound Your waist, and to Your waist, the resting place of the entire universe. I bow to Srimati Radhika, Your most beloved, and I bow to You, my Lord, whose pastimes are unlimited.
Every evening of Kartik
The Evening Lamp Offering
As the Damodarashtakam is sung, every devotee steps forward with a small ghee lamp and waves it before Yashoda and Damodara. Come and offer yours.
A prayer for Kartik
“O Lord, I do not ask You for liberation, nor for any other boon. I only pray that this form of Yours, as the little child of Vrindavan, may always stay in my heart.”
One lamp. One evening. One child bound by His mother’s love. Let your light reach Him this Kartik.
